NEMF 2003 - 9th Annual Samuel Ristich Foray: -- Foray Pictures -- Pictures at the foray -- Return to Main Menu

September 11 – 14, 2003
Scott’s on Oquaga Lake, SW of Deposit, NY
Hosting Clubs: SVMS, MYMS, CNYMS

As General Foray Chairman for NEMF 2003, I would like to invite all Mycophiles to plan now, and join in on NEMF’s Annual Foray.  This Foray will be following the format & protocols of past NEMF events.  SVMS’s Technical advisor, David Fischer will be the Faculty Chairman and he will provide a SUPER Mycologist lineup along with excellent programs and informative lectures during the event. Our Registrar’s, Sally Reymer and Roger Haggett will be the contacts for Registration.  Linda Hammond and her crew of Mycophagists will provide you with some of the best local mushroom dishes that she can produce.  Our Foray Walks and Socials will be Chaired by Ken Angulas.  The 3 evening Socials will be from 9-11pm every night, in which beer, wine, soda and finger foods will be provided, in the price of your Registration Rate. This year, the Foray will be held at Scott’s Family Resort on Oquaga Lake, approx. 3 miles SW of Deposit, NY, on the Pennsylvania Border.  We have negotiated with Scott’s, what I think is a very nice package. The Rates will be lower then last year.  An example for a double occupancy, complete package, for a 3 night/4 day stay will be $310, taxes included.  That is less then $78. per day, including room, 8 meals and much more. I urge you to visit their website to view their offerings -  www.scottsfamilyresort.com.  The resort is being rented out for Thursday through Sunday, for NEMF’s use only, except the golf courses.  Some of the offerings will be a Show on Sat. night, and boat rides/sing alongs.  There will be a variety of meals offered for vegetarians and meat eaters, at every meal.  If you golf, bring your clubs, there is NO charge to play, however carts are NOT included, but available. If a group of people want to stay together in one of three Houses (4 people), located on the Lakeside, please inform the Registrar’s.  The Southern Tier of NY can be mycologically rich, provided we get the moisture content from Winter through the Summer.  As of mid-January, 2003, we have had the most snowfall, that we have had in many years.  If this is any kind of sign of the future fungal potential, then we should expect a bountiful year. This area can produce a wide variety of Fungi.  There are all kinds of habitats in the areas that we will foray in; Mature Hardwoods, Evergreens, Mixed Woods, Marshes, Creeks, Valleys and medium size Mountains to climb, as well as easy walks.  All Forays into the woods will be within a 10 mile radius of Scott’s.  Very little traveling time in a bus!  There will also be forays into nearby woods, on the site, that will not require any bus transportation.  Last year’s successful NEMF Foray was attended by 230 fungal guests.  My goal is to have 250 people stay at Scott’s with 50+ daily commuters.  Please consider attending this event to increase your knowledge of Fungi, have a great time, learn from and meet, some of the most prestigious Guest Mycologists this side of the Mississippi River!
This letter is intended to kick-off NEMF 2003.  Please use this in your Newsletters to help me “spread the word”.  The Registration Forms are also completed, and I ask all Clubs to run those Forms, back to back, in their Newsletters a couple of times between now and Aug.,03.
Thanks, and see you in Sept., Richard F. Progovitz
